At Withernsea Primary School, want to encourage all children to lead balanced, active healthy lifestyles and promote a love for physical activity which will lead participation in sport beyond their time with us. P.E. lessons are an important part to this as we teach children to develop a wide range of fundamental movement skills and sports specific skills in fun and engaging ways.

Our aims, in line with the national curriculum, are for children to:

  • develop their skills in a broad range of physical activities
  • be physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1 Pupils during the autumn term and the first half of spring, will be working on their dance skills, exploring a variety of different movements from a range of stimuli. They will work on implementing a range of gym actions, such as travelling, turning, balancing and jumping. During the second half of spring and the summer term, children will be developing their multi skills through a range of games both individual and team.

Children in Year 1 also have the opportunity to participate in safer Scooter lessons where they will learn to ride, stop and be safe on a scooter.

Key Stage 2 P.E/Games

Each year group spends one term throughout the year engaging in dance, gym and Box2bfit.

Dance makes an invaluable contribution to the personal development of children and positively encourages growth of self-confidence and self-esteem. The pupils develop choreographic abilities by working together to create a sequence. They are taught how to develop their performance skills, which gives the children confidence to perform in front of one another and to give supportive feedback.

Gymnastics is an important part of the curriculum. It develops awareness and understanding of movements of the body, particularly the use of space, time and energy. The children can develop and experiment by using a variety of apparatus and practical challenges. Children have been able to explore movement by creating sequences on a more complex level, linking balances that include travel, jump and turn.

Circuits enable children to understand the impact physical exercise has the body, learn the importance of exercise and to feel the benefits of regular exercise.

Road safety and awareness is further developed in Year 3 as children complete their pedestrian skills.

Each year group participates in a different sport each term.

A variety of sports are taught throughout KS2; Year 4 and 6 concentrate on the skills for golf (Year 6), rugby, basketball and athletics.

Years 3 and 5 concentrate on the skill required for tennis, netball, cricket and athletics.

Year 4 also take part in swimming lessons during the summer term.
